The Z Flip 5's starting model has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. This is an improvement from the previous Flip 4 model, which began with only 128GB of storage. It comes with 25W wired charging (you must bring your charging brick) and 15W wireless charging. Additionally, it has 4.5W reverse wireless charging to help charge your earbuds. I have to open the phone and set it on my stand-style Belkin Qi charger, but it works.
The Z Flip 5 and its bigger Fold 5 sibling are the first Samsung foldable that close flat — previous versions had a visible gap between the two halves near the hinge when closed. The opening is gone, a new droplet-style hinge is in, and there has been much rejoicing. It makes the Z Flip 5 a bit sleeker-looking, though it feels just as chunky as ever in the pocket of my joggers.

That continues to be true of the Flip 5 — same as last year, it comes with a 12-megapixel f/1.8 stabilized primary camera and a 12-megapixel ultrawide. There's a 10-megapixel selfie camera on the inside screen, but one of the nice things about the flip form factor is that it's easy to use the better rear-facing cameras for selfies, so it's just there for video calls.
The imaging hardware is run-of-the-mill, as are the Z Flip 5's photos. The primary camera does just fine in good lighting and turned in a few shots I dig — give it ample indirect lighting and some vibrant colors, and you'll be impressed. Portrait mode is suitable, if not class-leading, like the S23 cameras.
Overall, the camera system of the $1,000 Galaxy Z Flip 5 is average at best. It lacks a telephoto lens, and the digital zoom by Samsung is not impressive. Ultrawide photos in good lighting appear dull, and colors look off in low light, accompanied by much smoothed-over noise. Even selfies taken in low light with the primary camera could be more consistent. I had to take multiple shots to get a single sharp photo due to the camera's slow shutter speed of 1/35 sec.
However, the phone's flip feature makes taking photos and videos a fun experience. Video clips are decent overall, and low-light video quality is enhanced by AI, which makes the pins look good. The phone can be folded into an L-shape to create an instant tripod, and the image preview can be moved to the bottom half of the screen to shoot from the hip. I get the most natural reactions in photos and videos of my toddler when I'm not holding the phone too close to my face.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 could benefit from some improvements, such as upgrading the camera, making it easier to run apps on the cover screen, and adding dustproofing. Although it's a bit bulky, it's still a better option than the Motorola Razr Plus, offering a more consistent camera and robust water resistance. Its cover screen widgets are also much better. The Oppo Find N2 Flip is another alternative, but outside of the US, its cover screen is smaller and less valuable, with no IP rating for durability.
The cover screen of the Z Flip 5 is not just a gimmick; it's a genuinely helpful feature that makes life easier in several ways when using the phone.
