OnePlus has put a conventional always-on scanner on the surface of the Power/Lock key instead of an under-screen fingerprint reader. The alert slider is also on the right side and has three positions - Ring, Vibrate, and Silent. The top of the phone has two speaker grilles, a microphone, and an IR blaster. Both screens come with 10-bit color depth, dynamic 120Hz refresh rate, 1440Hz PWM dimming, and 240Hz touch response, to name a few. Plus, they both have a maximum brightness of 1,400 nits and a peak brightness of 2,800 nits. And if that's not enough, they both support HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision.
Oh, and here's something cool - they both have Natural Tone adjustments, meaning they'll adjust depending on the ambient light. Pretty neat?
The foldable screen has a resolution of 2,440 x 2,268 pixels or 426ppi and an aspect ratio of almost 1:1. This screen is advertised as the more dynamic one capable of going down to 1Hz. On the other hand, the cover display has an even higher pixel density - 431ppi, and a resolution of 2,484 x 1,116 pixels. Its minimum refresh rate is 10Hz, according to the official specs.
We've completed our display tests, and the results are impressive! We measured 595 nits of maximum manual and 1,238 nits of full auto brightness on the foldable screen. The cover display numbers are similar - 566nits for manual and 1,159nits for automatic brightness. And get this - the minimum brightness for both screens was just 1.9 nit.

However, during our testing, we could not verify this due to the integrated Android refresh rate indicator only showing 120Hz or 60Hz. It is unclear whether this issue is due to OxygenOS or pre-release firmware.

Regarding streaming and HDR, the OnePlus Open supports HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision formats. All popular streaming apps recognize these formats, and thanks to the Widevine L1 support, they all stream high-resolution Dolby Vision content without any issues.
The Display options menu offers three visual enhancements - Image Sharpener, Video Color Boost, and Bright HDR Video Mode. The Image Sharpener enhances the clarity of low-quality photos and videos, while the Video Color Boost attempts to widen the color gamut in SDR content. However, both of these enhancements consume more battery power. They are also only available in a limited selection of apps, so you may not notice a significant difference in picture quality.
Regarding battery life, the OnePlus Open is powered by a 4,805mAh battery. It has LTPO3 OLED screens and runs on the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. Our battery life tests showed that the Open offered over 15 hours on its large foldable screen in both web and video scenarios. When closed, the Open clocked over 18 hours of web browsing and video playback on its cover display. The call time is also impressive at over 29 hours. Did you know the OnePlus Open has a pretty impressive Dolby Atmos sound system? It features not one, not two, but three speakers that support spatial sound for an incredible audio experience. The two top speakers are perfectly symmetrical, while the third is at the bottom. Interestingly, the second speaker on the top is the earpiece, and although it's weaker than the other two, it still helps to provide excellent Atmos and spatial effects. Pretty cool.
OnePlus phones have a unique speaker system that assigns speaker roles based on the phone's orientation. When the phone is in portrait mode, the top left speaker is the left channel, while the top right and bottom right ones play the right track. This arrangement remains the same even if you rotate the phone 180 degrees.
However, in landscape mode, the audio output adjusts to match the orientation of the speakers. In both directions, each speaker outputs some sound from the "opposite" channel but at a much lower volume.
The OnePlus Open scored an average loudness mark, with good audio quality and a nice mix of bass, vocals, and high frequencies. To test the loudness of the phone speakers, use the playback controls available while wearing headphones. We measure the loudness of the speakers in LUFS, with lower values indicating louder sound.
